The Frida Popup - Movie Night 2

Hey everyone! I'm Grant, an LA based writer/artist and long time friend of GSS. Welcome to the start of a new blog series for the website that will be published in addition to the Love Letter every week. Get Some Sleep is so important to me, and I'm excited to share the brand's past, present, and future evolution with all of you here. We'll be going through the daily minutia and interesting projects that happen every day in the operation of the brand.

Last weekend we held our second popup at the Frida Cinema in Anaheim. The first one was earlier this year in April and it was a huge success in my eyes. We got to bring the community together and meet everyone who brings GSS to life through their continued support.

Last April, we screened Annihilation in one theatre and vended clothes out of the other one. There was two screenings during the day, but we noticed that most people tended to show up just for the popup and missed the movie. It was a really awesome time regardless, but this time around we really wanted to emphasize the community building aspect of the event.

Due to that goal, we structured the popup such that clothes were sold outside after the screening and limited the movie to one showing. This time, Aftersun was shown and we were thrilled to be able to watch it with all of you. It was a really phenomenal event because of the amount of individual interaction we were able to build with the community. Some people thought the movie was boring, sad, riveting, and every other spectrum of emotion across the board. Simply because of the nature of these opinions, everyone got to build a nuanced conversation about the movie. It was a really unique way to watch the GSS community expand and grow together.

Personally, I liked the movie but found the pacing to be extremely slow. I heard a lot of takes from people while helping with checkout for clothing purchases and there seemed to be similar sentiments. I think next time we want to choose something perhaps a little more uplifting and inspiring rather than such an emotional and slightly upsetting movie. Here’s a tiktok I made showing our whole setup process if you’re interested!

I met some really cool people- shoutout to Quinn (hope that’s how you spell it), for bringing a polaroid camera and getting some group shots. Our friend Gasper got a great one of everyone all together which was awesome.

As these popups normally go, setup and teardown was an all day process. It really never gets old though to help run these events. Everything from packing the cars to setting up displays and products takes so much love and care. We try to build the environment to be welcoming and encourage great conversations between our staff and everyone who visits. I always love hearing about how far people have come for the popup or meeting recurring fans over time. It’s so awesome to watch you all grow with the brand and see that personal touch that makes GSS such a special community. We’re excited to do more popups next year and would love your input on where you’d like to see us! Absolutely leave a comment if you have any suggestions for event locations or community activities you’d be interested in for the future! See you next week :)
